Before joining WPTZ NBC5, Thurston worked at NBC10Boston and NECN as a reporter for 12 years. There, he received several awards, including two New England Regional Emmy Awards for feature/human interest reporting in 2022 and for news writing in 2017. The Radio Television Digital News Association granted him its Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for news writing in 2014 and 2018. Vermont Business Magazine nominated him as the Rising Star for his commitment to Vermont’s future.
Thurston started his career in Burlington, Vermont, where he served WCAX. There, he produced and reported the long-running weekly series “Made in Vermont,” which highlights small businesses. The show won him an Edward Morrow Award for best new series in 2016.
While in Burlington, Thurston received the Seigenthaler Award for Excellence in Network Television by the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association(now NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists).
