However, he was completely taken by surprise when a massive tornado struck. In May 2011, Stephens and his team covered the devastating destruction and loss of life in the EF-5 tornado for several days, which permanently altered Joplin, Missouri. Since then, he has returned to document the city’s recovery, showing the resilience of the people rebuilding their hometown. While in San Francisco, he covered the Kansas City Royals’ improbable run to the 2014 World Series against the Giants.

Before joining the station, Stephen had worked at WOLF as the primary anchor. Throughout his career, he has been awarded various awards, including 2 Emmy Awards in 2016. One of the Emmys was awarded for a KCTV collaboration with the Overland Park Fire Department to demonstrate the frightening speed of modern house fires. In 2017, he received the local NAACP media and journalism award.
