Brian Thompson Career

Thompson worked for NBC 4 New York as a New Jersey reporter on the weekday evening newscasts. His been with the station since 1998. He also serves as an Ambassador for the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN).

As part of its coverage of Hurricane Sandy, NBC 4 New York won the national Edward R. Murrow Award for its “News 4 New York Special Coverage: Hurricane Sandy.” Thompson contributed reporting from the Jersey Shore to that coverage. He aired continuously for 28 hours before, during, and after Hurricane Sandy stormed.

Thompson has broken several stories, including the resignation of James McGreevey, the governor of New Jersey at the time, due to a sex scandal. The governor made the initial announcement of what Thompson had originally reported on national television two hours later.

One of the most significant changes that occurred was the resignation of Governor McGreevey and his replacement by interim Governor Richard

One of the most significant stories of Thompson’s career, a 45-minute sit-down interview with the First Lady of New Jersey and Governor Codey regarding her lifelong battle with depression, was sparked by the resignation of Governor McGreevey and his replacement by acting Governor Richard Codey.

The first to report that Frank Lautenberg would come out of retirement to run for the U.S. Senate, Thompson was also the only TV reporter to cover New Jersey’s first same-sex wedding. A few days later, Thompson was the first to learn and report that the New Jersey Supreme Court would permit Lautenberg to replace Robert Torricelli on the ballot. Just months before the long-serving senator’s passing, he delivered the news that Sen. Lautenberg would not seek re-election 10 years later.

Thompson, who is renowned for his toughness and persistence, worked all night to guarantee coverage of a vital parliamentary discussion over a new state budget. He had a significant role in NBC 4 New York’s choice to broadcast live the parliamentary discussion on extending rent controls for New York City. Thompson fielded the story from Albany.

Thompson spent five years in Washington, D.C., covering the White House, Capitol Hill, Supreme Court, and government agencies for a dozen TV stations throughout the country before joining NBC 4 New York. During that time, he visited Hawaii for the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, Normandy for the 50th anniversary of the invasion, and Bosnia-Herzegovina for the Balkan conflict, less than a month after the first American troops arrived there.

Awards

Thompson’s reporting most recently played a significant role in NBC 4 New York’s award-winning COVID-19 coverage, which was recognized in January 2021 with the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for “creat(ing) a 360 view in real time of the coronavirus pandemic, with courageous and thorough reporting on the virus’s explosion in New York City.”

The duPont Award, given by Columbia University as well, is widely acknowledged as the Pulitzer Prize of the broadcast, documentary, and online worlds. A regional Edward R. Murrow Award for NBC 4 New York’s team coverage of the 2017 Tribeca terror bombings also acknowledged his dedication to journalistic quality.

For his work on the political program “What Matters” on NBC 4 New York, Thompson received a New York Emmy® Award in 2005. The NY/NJ Baykeeper gave him the inaugural Environmental Journalism Award for two pieces on an unauthorized development on the edge of New York Harbor, and the Associated Press named him seven times for best coverage by a New Jersey-based correspondent.

Following 9/11, Thompson was the first and only reporter to hear the New Jersey police tapes of the World Trade Center attack and broadcast them, leading to a piece that was eventually nominated for an Emmy
