Burrell’s interest in cooking began when she was just 3 years old after she watched American chef Julia Child and noticed her mother’s homemade food. After gaining experience at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners (ICIF), she remained in Italy for 9 months, serving various restaurants, including La Bottega del ’30, a small restaurant in Tuscany, Italy.
Following her time in Italy, Burrell came back to the U.S. as a sous chef at Lidia Bastianich’s Felidia. In this capacity, she was the chef at Savoy, a small prix fixe dining room. Subsequently, she started teaching at the Institute of Culinary Education. Joe Bastianich, Bastianich’s son and restaurateur, and Chef Mario Batali nominated her as the chef for Italian Wine Merchants, their New York wine store.
Burrell later joined Centro Vinotec, an Italian restaurant in the West Village, which opened in 2007, as the executive chef. In 2010, Burrell and Chef Beau MacMillan began hosting the Worst Cooks in America series on the Food Network. In this role, they also led the competitors through a culinary boot camp to help them improve their cooking skills. The show’s first season aired on January 3, 2010. The following year, she became the fourth runner-up in the Food Network’s The Next Iron Chef culinary competition after she was eliminated during week 6 of the competition.

Burrell passed away at her apartment in Brooklyn on June 17, 2025, at the age of 55. Her husband was the last person to see her alive at roughly 1 a.m. The New York City Police Department said that they found her unconscious and unresponsive on the shower floor with a large quantity of pills nearby, around 7:50 a.m. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene. Her body was reportedly cold when she was found, suggesting that she had passed away several hours earlier. On July 24, 2025, her death had been ruled a suicide from the mixed ffects of ethanol, cetirizine, diphenhydramine, and amphetamine.
