While at the university, Cavanaugh worked at the institute’s newsroom as a reporter, executive producer, and anchor. During his senior year, he anchored their weekly newscast at 5:30, which got broadcast out to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and Facebook.
Cavanaugh was part of the university’s Baseball team for 4 years. During his first year, he was a 3rd baseman and a relief pitcher. He later switched to bullpen to become a crucial part of the late-game action in his 4th year.
While in high school, he used to write for the school’s magazine called the Lancer Spirit, which fueled his passion for journalism. He began as a reporter for the newspaper as a freshman and became a news editor during his sophomore year. During his junior year, he created his section in the school newspaper staff, food and drink.

Cavanaugh works as a multimedia journalist for CBS6. During his tenure at the station, he covered local politics, Town Meeting Day, high school sports, and investigated extensively the impact of staff shortage on the community, and the constant change of the Vermont State College system.
Cavanaugh’s most interesting assignment is following a chain of burglaries in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, that impacted businesses and had them increase security. He also worked with Kingdom Access Television in St. Johnsbury as a photographer. He filmed town meetings, concerts, and board meetings. He has also received a Vermont Association of Broadcasters Award.
