She launched her news career in her hometown, Atlanta, where she worked as a general assignment reporter for the NBC Affiliate, 11 Alive WXIA. She also worked as a freelance reporter for FOX 5. Moreover, she filed live reports for CNN, MSNBC, and The Weather Channel. During her tenure at 11 Alive, she received nominations for a Regional Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement and Best Newscast.

Following her tenure in Atlanta, Barnes began anchoring the weekend newscasts at NBC 7 KNSD and the CW affiliate KSWB-TV in San Diego, California. In January 2007, 944 Magazine granted her its Platinum Awards Issue for San Diego’s Favorite Female Newscaster. She then returned to South Carolina, where she served ABC Columbia as the primary anchor from 2008 to 2018. While working in the Midlands, she broadcast many stories that attracted national news, including the Charleston Church Shootings, the 2015 floods, and the removal of the Confederate Flag at the State House.

Barnes won a nomination for a Regional Emmy Award for Continuing Coverage. In 2016, the Southeastern National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honored her with an EMMA for Excellence in My Market in the category of “Anchor-News.” That same year, she got an honorable mention for her anchoring of the SC flood coverage.
