Waddell has modelled for over 15 years, working with major global brands like Levi’s and Timberland. He initially wanted to be a gym teacher just like his parents, who were high school teachers. While studying in Melbourne, a local agent approached him and convinced him to try modeling. He later jump-started his international career through GQ and L’Officiel Hommes, moving to New York to model full-time. He then became a regular for Giorgio Armani.
Besides his modeling career, Waddell is involved with the Watoto Project, which helps disadvantaged orphans and builds orphanages in Africa. He also co-founded Revive & Thrive and RJ Waddell Properties. In addition, he serves as a private investor for KEEN Growth Capital and Biome Australia Group. Moreover, he is a founding partner for Tastemaker Food Co.

In 2021, Waddell accused Zac Efron and Netflix of stealing his concept for Down to Earth. He said that he filmed a pilot with the title Down to Earth with Ben Waddell and pitched it to US producers in 2017 before Netflix released a similar title starring Zac Efron. Efron’s legal team refuted the accusations, claiming that Efron and his partners had never had contact with Waddell or heard of his show.
Waddell’s brother launched a GoFundMe campaign to help fund legal action against Netflix, roughly collecting $12,260. By July 2023, he had stopped seeking legal action against Efron or Netflix. All the collected funds were used to cover existing legal costs from the 2021 case.

In December 2023, McKenna shared that they chose to split up because distance and communication prevented them from exploring their romantic connection.
