Professional Life

Chuck Goudie Career

Goudie works as the senior investigative reporter for WMAQ NBC 5 Chicago. He came to NBC Chicago after being on the air at ABC Chicago for almost 45 years. He mainly focuses on terrorism, political corruption, organized crime, and global drug cartels. In addition, he has worked in Chicago for multiple decades, earning a reputation for being one of the state’s toughest, fairest, best-sourced, and decorated investigative reporters.

Goudie launched his career when he was only 12 years old in Detroit, where he had regular weekly roles on two children’s shows that were broadcast on WXYZ-TV. He began doing hard news in 1975 as a Detroit-based reporter and producer at the NBC-owned News and Information Service, the first 24-hour, all-news national radio network. He landed his first TV news reporting job at WSOC in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1977. Originally an NBC affiliate, he was promoted to main sports anchor when WSOC changed affiliations to ABC.

Following his time in Charlotte, Goudie began working as a general assignment reporter at ABC/WLS-TV in Chicago in 1980. He held that role for 10 years before being promoted to chief investigative reporter in 1990. There, he received major awards for his compelling and hard-hitting investigative reports that occasionally produced results. For example, his “Licenses-for-Bribes” investigation uncovered how Illinois commercial driver’s licenses were being illegally sold to hundreds of unfit truckers. That report prompted the FBI to go undercover, an endeavor that caused dozens of federal corruption convictions, including former Gov. George Ryan.

Goudie spent 6 months looking into accidents, misconduct, and negligence by lead members of the Illinois State Police unit that guarded Gov. Rod Blagojevich. That investigation resulted in an agency overhaul and was a forerunner case to Blagojevich’s federal convictions and lengthy prison sentence. In addition, he looked into sexual abuse allegations against the late Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. That investigation led to the cardinal’s accuser dropping charges.

Goudie’s other important investigations have caused the closure of illegal businesses and dubious charities, changed or created laws, and led to criminal charges and the imprisonment of wrongdoers. He has received numerous journalism’s top honors, including a national Edward R. Murrow Continuous Television News Reporting Award. Additionally, he earned a national Emmy Award for shedding light on how government agencies and chemical companies were unprepared against fatal terrorist attacks.

Goudie has looked into and filed news stories from four continents, including behind the walls of the Vatican, New York’s “Ground Zero,” as well as war zones in the Middle East, the Arabian Sea, and the Balkans. He spent 10 years writing a weekly news commentary column for the Daily Herald newspaper in suburban Chicago.
