Short received his diploma from Arbor High School before enrolling at Adams State University Athletics in Alamosa, Colorado. There, he majored in Nursing and played for the Grizzlies. He planned to work in emergency medicine or within the medical field.
Just three days into his freshman football camp in college, Short separated his AC joint in his shoulder. That injury, coupled with frustration over being forced to play on the offensive line, caused him to lose his passion for football.
Short ultimately decided to drop out of college to figure out his next career moves. He played D2 club rugby recreationally back home before entering the U.S. Olympic development pipeline. He won an official residency spot at the Olympic Training Center and funded training, medical, and travel services under Team USA coaches. Over the course of his career, he played for the San Diego Legion from 2018 to 2020, the NOLA Gold from 2021 to 2023, and the Seattle Seawolves from 2024 to 2025. He began his professional career playing for the San Diego Legion, where he scored 3 tries in 23 games (19 starts).
Short scored 3 tries during the 2022 season while playing for the NOLA Gold, gaining 903m and beating 19 defenders. He earned 10th place in tackles made, on 195, for a success rate of 90.28%. NOLA Gold announced that they had signed him to a 2-year contract through the 2024 MLR season on June 17, 2022. On August 11, 2023, he was traded to the Seattle Seawolves for Seattle’s 1st Rd pick in the 2023 MLR Collegiate Draft and 2024 Salary Cap Considerations. He was sidelined for roughly half of the 2024 season because of an autoimmune disease.
Short debuted with the Seawolves in Round 12 just as the Seattle back row was getting thin, helping the team lock in the 2nd seed in the Western Conference. He later broke his hand in the Western Conference Semifinal against his former team, the San Diego Legion. He then returned to the Seawolves starting lineup just 2 weeks later for the 2024 Championship Game, making 11 tackles as they lost to the New England Free Jacks. Further, he made more than 70 tackles and ran for over 200m gained in just 6 games in 2024. This earned him a Team of the Week selection for his performance in Round 17 and for passing 500 career tackles.
Short appeared in all 17 games for Seattle in 2025, starting 8 times, finishing with 98 tackles and 199m gained in possession.
