Hawkins grew up in the west side neighborhood of Detroit on Stoepel Street and Livernois Avenue in a four-family flat with her mother and aunts. While she and her mother lived upstairs, one of her aunts lived downstairs and the other in the flat next door. Her mother was strict while raising her and she rarely went outside. Her daily routine included going to school, completing her homework, eating, sleeping, and doing it again. She would play with her cousins for a while before focusing back on school.
Around 4th grade, Hawkins was taken from her mother. Her paternal grandmother and aunt resided in Alabama. Yearly, she’d alternate between Alabama where she stayed with her grandmother, and Detroit where she studied. Thus, she had an unstable childhood. She told dbusiness.com that she had grown up in an abusive home during an interview. Her father was born in 1951 and is 73 years old. He still works at Ford.

Gocha Hawkins Career
Hawkins was inspired to get into the hair industry after she saw the business of a young woman who was doing her hair. Compared to selling drugs, she decided to get into the hair industry. While in school, she changed her major to Cosmetology and she later opened her salon business across the street from the Alabama State University campus.
In 1999, Hawkins moved to Orlando where she debuted a 14-chair salon. Later, she started her cosmetology career and worked with A-list celebrities. She later sold her salon in Orlando so that she could work as an image consultant across the country starting with Detroit, Miami, and eventually to Atlanta in 2010. While in Miami, she worked with celebrities like Drake, Beyoncé, and Serena Williams.
During her stint in Atlanta, Hawkins worked with celebrities like Vivica A. Fox, Pitbull, Ja Rule, and Nicki Minaj. Additionally, she launched a five-chair salon. Then, she got the chance to appear in the reality show, L.A. Hair. As a result of her appearance in the show, she hit it big and decided to close her salon and opened Gocha Salon in Midtown. After working there, she noticed that the area had many chain restaurants but nowhere to eat. Thus, she decided to open a restaurant.
In December 2018, Hawkins decided to open Gocha’s Breakfast Bar in Atlanta’s Cascade region. She then closed Gocha Salon. She preferred that her customers would the food while it was hot at the restaurant and thus didn’t create a go-to menu. However, this changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Hawkins would get bad reviews because of long wait times to get tables and they couldn’t accommodate all their guests. Thus, she decided to open a food truck to alleviate the situation. In January 2022, she opened a 22-foot-long food truck alongside her restaurant. At the same time, she had already opened a Breakfast Bar location in Fayetteville. She now owns Gocha’s Restaurant Group, which incorporates Gocha’s Breakfast Bars and Gocha’s Tapas Bar.

A troubled teen, Hawkins started selling drugs so that she could cater to her needs. As a result, she was imprisoned in Montgomery, Alabama at the age of 19. She said that she was set up twice; by a person she deemed a friend and her ex-husband. She was sentenced and spent two years in jail before she was released on parole.
