Pearce starred as Detective Lieutenant Edmund”Shotgun Ed” Exley in the crime film, L.A. Confidential in 1997. Edmund is a sergeant working for the Los Angeles, LAPD in 1953 and the son of the well-known detective, Preston Exley. With a determination to live up to his father’s reputation, he testifies against corrupt officers involved in the “Bloody Christmas” case in exchange for promotion to Detective Lieutenant. He does this despite the advice not to from the precinct captain, Dudley Smith. Also, his father was murdered by an unknown killer Edmund dubbed “Rollo Tomasi.” The film shadows the story of 3 LAPD officers in 1953 and the crossing of police corruption and Hollywood celebrity.

In 2000, he starred as a previous insurance investigator, Leonard Shelby in the psychological thriller, Memento. Shelby suffers from anterograde amnesia resulting in short-term memory loss and the inability to form new memories. The film follows him as he tries to find the men who raped and killed his wife, Catherine. Due to his condition, he uses Polaroid photographs, handwritten notes, and tattoos to trace information he won’t recall.
