Hendricks’ wife, Susan, passed away in 2023 because of a heart attack. Before her death, she battled rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs. Additionally, she was a smoker. These three factors made her susceptible to a heart attack. He learned this while attending a Laura W. Bush Institute event in fall 2024.
To commemorate his wife, he became a volunteer chair for the American Heart Association’s 2025 Permian Basin Go Red for Women initiative. Since the death of his wife, he and his children have undergone testing for heart disease and make a conscious effort to spread awareness to others. He previously spent thirteen years in Midland as an anchor and reporter for the NBC affiliate. For seven and a half years, he served as the sports director as well.
Hendricks is highly renowned for his dedication to the community, including his work as a community adviser for the Midland Junior Football Association. Moreover, he served as the past president of the board and co-chair of the golf committee for the National Kidney Foundation Serving West Texas. Also, he served as a co-host for the Permian Basin Rehab Center Telethon and was a board member for Senior Link Midland.
Hendricks has been actively involved in Special Olympics, winning the State Special Olympics Media Award in 1993 and 1996. Additionally, he was honored by Special Olympics in 2003 with the Outstanding Service from a Community Leader award.
