Dana was born to the late Kent Dana and Carol Ann Huber. Kent Dana was a journalist who served at 12 News for 35 years. He passed away at the age of 80 in April 2022. His grandfather Joe Dana served at KOY Radio Station. Dana grew up in a family of six siblings: Michael Dana, Kathryn Dana, Susan Allen, Joe Dana, and his step-siblings Kelly Dana and Kari Gibney.

His interest in journalism began during his teenage years, as he was already finding ways to cover news in the valley, while he served as an editor for his high school’s newspaper and a youth reporter for The Arizona Republic. He has covered various topics from death penalty cases to education finances. He has investigated immigration in southern Arizona and polygamy in northern Arizona.
