Since he was young, O’Connor wanted to be a professional artist but didn’t think he was skilled enough. Thus, he transitioned to rugby before he discovered acting. At the age of 7, he secured his initial big role where he portrayed the scarecrow in a school production of The Wizard of Oz, succeeded by a small role in Bugsy Malone at St Edward’s. In Bugsy Malone, he acted with his classmate, Tahliah Barnett, who later became an awarded singer under the stage name FKA Twigs.
O’Connor has commented that his school’s drama program assisted him in coping with dyslexia for numerous years, particularly when he was preparing for his GCSEs. He then joined Bristol Old Vic Theatre School where he signed with an agent during his third years.
After completing his training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he secured roles in TV series like Doctor Who in 2013 and Peaky Blinders in 2014. His breakthrough came in 2017 when he portrayed a sheep farmer in Francis Lee’s God’s Own Country. He won a British Independent Film Award for his performance in the film.

O’Connor developed the Waterlogged initiative to collect funds for a mental health charity across England and Wales called Mind. He tried to swim 30 swims around the UK and Ireland in his 30th year after gaining inspiration from his mother who swam 60 times in her 60th year and by Roger Deakin’s Waterlog.
In January 2020, he alongside Olivia Colman went to the Stars Appeal aimed at boosting the patient experience at the Salisbury District Hospital. In December of that year, he alongside Emma Corrin presented their company for tea as part of a series of prize draws supporting War Child UK’s Torn From Home appeal. He appeared in Loewe’s campaign shot in the Baja California desert for the Eye/Loewe/Nature collection in March 2021. The campaign pledged 15 euros of every sale to Fundación Global Nature, which benefits wildlife and endangered species protection.

The film follows his self-discovery journey and transformation as he starts a relationship with Romanian migrant worker Gheorghe. Through their connection, her starts to face his weaknesses and rearrange his life. For his role in the film, he experimented with method acting. O’Connor won a British Independent Film Award for his performance in the film.
