Hsu was born in Taiwan, where she grew up until she was 11, when she moved with her family to Chicago. They lived in Chicago’s Chinatown, Rogers Park, and Morton Grove. She was born to her father, Fun Yuen Hsu, and his wife. Both her parents have unfortunately passed away.

Hsu’s mother was born in 1977 and died of colon cancer in 2019 at the age of 74 after being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. This contributed to Hsu’s participation in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and championed the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative.

Yuen was a Tai chi master who taught martial arts at his school, named Hsu Fun Yuen Tai Chi Academy. He taught tai chi in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Miami, and New York, in the US. While he was in Taiwan, he founded a Tai Chi Chuan Association, which attracted many students.
