Vara works as a co-anchor for KNBC NBC4 Los Angeles. She is on air at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. on weekends and at 11 a.m. on weekdays. She also works as a general assignment reporter during the week. The Los Angeles TV veteran first moved to Southern California in 1994 as a co-anchor of Today in LA after working on the East Coast. In 2001, she left the station for KABC, where she spent 9 years on the morning news before returning to NBC 4.
Since moving to California, Vara has gained a reputation for her versatility and journalistic integrity. During this time, she has filed live reports during significant breaking news stories, like the Columbine High School massacre, the O.J. Simpson criminal case, the North Hollywood bank robbery shootout, the Conrad Murray lawsuit, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the Chilean Miner Rescue.
Before her tenure at NBC4, Vara served at NBC stations in Dallas, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C. She also worked at ABC affiliates KVII-TV in Amarillo, Texas, from 1987 to 1988 and KSAT-TV from 1988 to 1992 in her hometown of San Antonio, Texas.
Vara has received three Golden Mike Awards for Best Daytime Newscast. She was a member of the team that clinched two regional Emmy Awards for Best Regularly Scheduled Daily Morning Newscast. Besides her work on TV, she has dedicated her time to organizations that promote Lupus awareness and education.
Vara’s passion for equestrian sports led her to help local non-profit organizations using horses and riding skills to teach inner-city youth life skills. One of these organizations, the Compton Junior Posse, honored her in 2011 for her work with the after-school program that assists Compton youngsters in staying off the streets and out of gangs.
Vara has received the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s Local Impact Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. She also received the prestigious Hispanic Heritage Award from President Clinton and the Women of Courage Award from the City of Los Angeles. She launched her broadcasting career in college, where she was a producer and host of “North Texas Scene.”
