Over the course of her career, the Southland has broadcast various significant stories, including national stories from the Christopher Dorner manhunt and the Los Angeles Kings’ Stanley Cup win in 2012. Earlier in her career, she was deployed at Ground Zero for almost two weeks while broadcasting the World Trade Center crisis. She also spent numerous years reporting the impacts of that tragedy.
Lopez maintains that a journalist’s work is done when the community news stories make a difference. For example, she did a piece on a 6th-grade class that launched a Facebook page to trade their homemade art to raise funds for a classmate whose family couldn’t afford a proper burial for his father. Just one day after her story aired, the site raised over $3000.
Lopez has been a journalist for over 2 decades and feels honored to share people’s stories and meet many inspiring people along the way. As a breast cancer survivor, she has shared her own struggles during treatment and recuperation with a series of stories on her brave fight against the disease as a working mother and wife.
Before her tenure at NBC4, Lopez spent a decade at WPIX in New York. She worked as a general assignment reporter before climbing the ranks to sports anchor. Later, she became the main sports anchor and a field reporter for the NY Mets, where she worked with the late great Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver.
In her early career, Lopez was one of only two reporters on Court TV’s issue-oriented legal program “Pros and Cons” with Nancy Grace. While working on the show, she covered numerous controversial lawsuits, including the parole hearing of John Lennon’s murderer.
Lopez has earned multiple industry awards, including several Los Angeles area Emmy Awards for her live anchoring and investigative reports. Lopez is a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed with Stage IIA invasive breast cancer in April 2013. She decided to go public with her entire treatment process to replace fear with hope and raise awareness.
After feeling off and unusually bloated, Lopez performed a standard self-exam and felt a distinct lump on her breast. She described the lump as tight, hard, and not mushy, likening it to the knuckle of a chicken bone. The following day, she called her gynecologist, leading to the mammogram and biopsy that confirmed the cancer. Her medical team at Huntington Hospital Cancer Center treated her with 5 rounds of chemotherapy followed by a double mastectomy. To stay ahead of her hair loss, she proactively shaved her head right after her first chemotherapy session.
Upon sharing her diagnosis, Lopez found out that both her mother and maternal grandmother had previously battled cervical cancer. She produced Replacing Fear with Hope, a five-part web series detailing her journey for NBC Los Angeles. Following her bout with the disease, she frequently works as an emcee and moderator for American Cancer Society events.
