Romero was born to Viola Lydia and Andy Romero. Andy and Viola got married in Oklahoma City, where he was stationed in the United States Air Force. They raised her in Denver, Colorado, alongside her brother, Leroy, and three sisters, Robyn, Peggy, and Debbie. Unfortunately, both of her parents and her sister, Peggy, passed away.
Andy passed away from cancer at the age of 57 on December 7, 1988. In January 2022, Viola passed away at the age of 91 after battling severe dementia. Following her mother’s passing, she decided to honor her life and legacy by giving back to Alzheimer’s and Dementia Awareness and Research.

Romero tied the knot with David Angulo on July 11, 2003, at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens. On July 11, 2026, she posted a video of them on her Instagram account and captioned, “23 years ago today I said “I do” to the love of my life. We weren’t young kids crazy in love…You are my love, my confidant, my best friend, my rock…my heart. Happy anniversary 🤍.” The pair met in January 1994 while attending a five-week Spanish immersion program at the University of Guadalajara.

Beloved by millions of Southern California viewers, Romero’s versatility and in-depth coverage shine in many of Southern California’s biggest stories. She has worked both behind the scenes and on screen, reporting and producing many programs. She has also gone on specials assignments in Mexico, Italy, El Salvador, and the Czech Republic.
Before her tenure at NBC 4 Los Angeles, Romero spent more than 20 years at KTLA-TV in Los Angeles. There, she anchored and reported in almost every newscast, including anchoring the weekend morning news. She spent 10 years as an anchor and reporter for KUSA, the NBC affiliate in Denver, Colorado, before moving to Los Angeles. While in Denver, she provided coverage for the Waco standoff, the 1993 papal visit, and the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
Over the course of her career, Romero has earned multiple Golden Mike Awards from the Radio and Television National News Association of Southern California for her reporting, anchoring, and producing work. She has also received six LA Area Emmy Awards, including for Best Feature News Reporting. In 2020, Romero talked about her weight journey, stating that she had struggled with her weight since about the 4th grade. She decided to lose weight when her doctor warned that she was headed toward serious metabolic issues. She neglected herself while looking after others, leading to stress, lack of sleep, being unhealthy, and not finding time to exercise. After realizing the impact of her choices, she decided to get serious, doing intermittent fasting since June of that year. As a result, she lost more than 50 pounds.

Romero survived a helicopter crash in the Colorado mountains in the 1990s while working for Denver’s KUSA-TV. While covering a story in the area, the station’s “Sky 9” helicopter experienced engine failure. Fortunately, the pilot, who was a veteran of the Vietnam War, steered the failing aircraft down onto Pikes Peak. He landed the helicopter in the safest possible spot amidst the treacherous mountain terrain. Though she sustained moderate physical injuries, she suffered from vivid nightmares about the incident for years. She has never flown in a helicopter again, except when they airlifted her out.
