He regularly appears on weekdays at 4, 5, and 6 p.m. He has covered many of the region’s most notable stories since joining NBC 4 New York. For example, he was one of the first reporters on the scene of the Empire State Building shooting shortly after joining the station.
Santia was on the ground on Staten Island when Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the Tri-State. After his crew car submerged, he and his team safely rode out the storm after a kind family took them in when they lost their car and possessions. His reports during the COVID-19 pandemic were instrumental in winning the station the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-C in January 2021.
Santia received a New York Emmy® in 2016 for the story “Walking Again, For the First Time,” which followed one man’s struggle to regain his ability to walk. He received two New York Emmys® for his investigative works, Hijacking Hollywood and The Gold Bucket Bandit, two years later.
“Hijacking Hollywood” examined a string of robberies that affected movie production businesses working in New York City. In “The Gold Bucket Bandit,” he followed a gold robbery suspect in Ecuador and brought viewers a fascinating adventure throughout the alleged deed. Subsequently, the story was covered both nationally and internationally.
Santia has gone on assignments outside of the Tri-State market to cover big stories. For example, he traveled to Aurora, Colorado, to broadcast the fatal movie theater shooting in 2012. In 2017, he went to Las Vegas to broadcast the fatal concert shooting outside the Mandalay Bay casino. After one year, he was on the road again, traveling to North Carolina to broadcast the effects of Hurricane Florence. He was implanted with the NYPD during the broadcast and documented their occasional quick water rescues for Tri-State viewers.
Before arriving at NBC 4 New York, Santia spent more than 15 years at WDIV in Detroit. There, he started his career as an intern, advanced to investigative reporter, and eventually won an Emmy® Award for outstanding journalism.
During his time in Detroit, Santia provided coverage for former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s investigation, arrest, prosecution, and punishment. Additionally, he documented Koran-burning pastor Terry Jones’ trip to Dearborn, Michigan. In 2018, his report on the notorious Bob Bashara murder case in Michigan was highlighted in CNBC’s “Deadly Rich” series.
