Nelsen’s father, Ray Nelsen, was born on March 1, 1935. On March 1, 2017, he shared a photo of them on his Facebook account and wished him a happy 82nd birthday. Ray worked as a pastor at churches in Mt. Angel and Chehalis from the 70s to 90s and in the Hood River Valley from the 60s to 70s. Nelsen tied the knot with Sheila in October 1997. On October 4, 2024, Sheila posted a collage of them on her Facebook account and captioned “Happy 27th anniversary to this amazing man! The couple has two children and lives near Corbett on farm/forest land. Also, they own quite a few chickens, ducks, and two cats. Andrew was born on October 12, 2000, and is 25 years old. Nelsen works as the chief meteorologist for KPTV FOX 12 Oregon. He chiefly forecasts the weather for KPTV’s evening newscasts, including the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11 p.m. shows. At times, he forecasts for all these shows.
The Pacific Northwest “local” has spent his adult life and nearly all his childhood within a 2-hour drive of Portland. He spent his school years in Mt. Angel, Oregon, and Chehalis, Washington. He is a proud “weather geek” who turned in late homework because he spent too much time staring out the window.
Right after receiving his undergraduate degree, Nelsen tried multiple TV jobs in the early 1990s, but was told that he “looked like a teenager.” Instead, he accepted a brief stint at a small local company, where he forecasted wind in the Columbia River Gorge.
When he was 24, Nelsen looked more like an adult and was employed by KOIN. He started his tenure there as a weekend meteorologist and was later promoted to weekday evening meteorologist before moving to FOX 12 in 2000. So far, he has spent more than 28 years on Portland TV!
