Harvey works for KCAL CBS Los Angeles as an anchor at 5,6,9, and 11 p.m. She has served the station for over 3 decades, making her the longest-running anchor in prime-time news. After working at KCAL for 2 decades, she started co-anchoring for KCAL’s sister station, KCBS News at 5, 6 & 11 p.m. Also, she played a crucial role as one of the country’s initial anchors for the first nightly three-hour newscast. Aside from her anchoring roles, she has made guest appearances as a co-host on CBS’ The Talk.

Harvey started her career when she worked for WNEM in Saginaw, Michigan as a general assignment reporter. She later anchored and produced the newscasts at 6 and 11 p.m. In 1981, Harvey assisted in the debut of CNN Headline News and a year later she started co-anchoring CNN’s Daybreak program. 

Before working in Los Angeles, she worked in Chicago at WGN as an anchor and reporter. During her time in Chicago, she did an investigative report about flawed pap smears which caused new health legislation in Illinois to close a lab liable for numerous of those faulty smears in Tarzana, California. Also, she was mentioned to the Governor’s Task Force on Education. 

Harvey’s career has spanned several continents, during which she has broadcasted big local news events, presidential inaugurations, political conventions, and international stories. For example, she broadcasted the OJ Simpson case, the Presidential Inauguration of George H.W. Bush, and was the first journalist to interview dismissed juror, Jeanette Harris. Her reports have taken her to El Salvador during the civil war, South Africa for the unforgettable first all-race elections, and Eastern Africa and Russia during the AIDS epidemic. Additionally, she reported live about the induction of Pope Benedict XVI from Vatican City.

During her career, she has run interviews with notable figures like Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Ferdinand Marcos, F.W. De Klerk, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Gerry Adams, Rev. Jesse Jackson. In 2019, she interviewed Nipsey Hussle, a Grammy-awarded rapper months before his death. She reported the riots in LA in 1992 and in 2020 after the demise of George Floyd.

Harvey has received 25 awards including three for best newscast during her broadcast career. Also, she received the Golden Mike from the Radio & Television News Association and the LA Press Club’s Joseph M. Quinn Award. The city of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors announced October 30, 2009, Pat Harvey Day for her 20th anniversary. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences gave her the LA Area Governor’s Award in 2015 for her work at CBS2/KCAL9 and philanthropic work in the community. In 2012, she served as an inductee of the National Black Journalists Hall of Fame in Washington, DC.   

Aside from journalism, she has involved herself with community service where she has supported children, breast cancer, education, the special needs community, and domestic violence victims. The NAACP gave her the Ida B. Wells Award and she secured the Silver Star Award from the YMCA. In 2002, she served among local personalities to carry the Olympic torch through LA in 2002. She sang the national anthem alongside her daughter in Dodgers Stadium and has sung with musical legends like Smokey Robinson, Barry Gordy, and Stevie Wonder.
