Michele works for WBRC FOX6 as a weather reporter. Before joining the station in November 2022, she worked as a talent recruiter for Digital Career Opportunities Worldwide LLC.
Tonia first became acquainted with WBRC FOX6 News anchor Steve Crocker and News Director Shannon Isbell in the summer of 2022 at the National Association of Black Journalists convention.
Tonia (pronounced TUH-nee-uh) spoke with them about her desire to attend graduate school for meteorology and relocate to Birmingham in order to be nearer to her fiance and family.
She and her sister started posting daily vlogs to their YouTube channel, Topic Twins, where she found her voice for informing people and interacting with them. Later, she developed an interest in reporting the weather, which gave her on-air presence a head start on her job and school.
Throughout the pandemic, Tonia was able to secure her first on-air position at KHQ in Spokane, Washington. A green screen that she purchased online and installed in her parents’ bedroom was used to construct her first weather reel!
She submitted the movies to her YouTube site after recording some weather hits and editing them together. There, she received unanticipated traction, which eventually led to the opportunity for her first BIG GIRL job.
Tonia made the decision to pursue her studies after working as a journalist in Spokane. She enrolled in Syracuse’s graduate program for broadcast and digital journalism while working as a digital journalist for Forbes. Prior to obtaining her subsequent career opportunity after graduating, she gained knowledge of broadcasting while attending Syracuse.
Tonia quietly waited for an opportunity closer to home while temporarily working as a meteorologist for a news station in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is now right here at WBRC thanks to it.
Tonia is eager to share her expertise with WBRC and the University of Alabama community.
