Gathegi’s career started in theatre, and his stage credits include Two Trains running at the Old Globe Theatre, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, Othello, Twelfth Night, and Cyrano de Bergerac, among others. His first official role was in the movie Crank (2006) as a Haitian Cabbie. However, he initially tried out for Kaylo but the role was given to actor Efren Ramirez. Gathegi was hesitant at first about doing a Haitian accent but received help from a Haitian friend. He had guest roles in Lincoln Heights and Veronica Mars, Gathegi went on to star as Bodie in Death Sentence, Darudi in The Fifth Patient, and Cheese in Gone Baby Gone.
Later Gathegi had a role in the television drama House as Dr. Jeffrey Cole a Morman intern, who was regularly mocked for his religious beliefs by Dr. House, who was an atheist. During the year 2008, He was a guest star in films such as CSI: Miami, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Life on Mars and then later cast in the movie Twilight as Laurent.
in 2011 he appeared in Atlas Shrugged as Eddie Willers and in the fifth season of Justified as Jean Baptist, however, he was not amused by the role and later asked to be written off. Gathegi was also a recurring character in The Backlist aired on NBC, he played the role of Matias Solomon, an operative for a covert organization. He also reenacted the role in the season Crime thriller, The Blacklist: Redemption between the years 2016-2017. he was also depicted in StartUP as Ronald Dacey. Gathegi starred in X-Men: First Class as Armando Muñoz/Darwin in 2011. Darwin is a mutant with the ability “reactive evolution,” an ability that enables him to adapt to any conditon in his enviroment. He was particularly interested in the character Darwin after seeing X-Men 2 in 2003, despite him initially auditioning for Agent Zero in the film X-Men Origin: Wolverine.
Gathegi auditioned for X-Men: First Class while reading for Banshee, learning later that he would play Darwin a few days before the shoot. In preparation for the role, he worked out and began doing an eating regime to get in shape. He also looked into the comics about his character. Darwin’s transformations were done through computer graphics with a computer-generated version of Gathegi that would flawlessly blend in and out of the human form.

Gathegi starred in For All Mankind as Dev Ayesa. Dev Ayesa is a founder of a private space company called the Helios Aerospace, they had a goal of reaching Mars before NASA and the Soviet Union. The movie entail how an alternate history is dramatized, depicting the the expectetion of what would’ve happened if the Gobal race had ended, after the sovient union had landed on the moon before the United states.
