Kuperstein spent more than ten years in South Florida working as a weekday news and sports anchor for NBC6 / WTVJ before moving to New York. Kuperstein reported from the 2012 presidential debate at Lynn University and covered three presidential elections for WTVJ. Additionally, he oversaw the station’s coverage of sports, which included live Olympics coverage from 2016.
Both the NBC station WHIZ-TV in Zanesville, Ohio, and the Fox affiliate WUPW-TV in Toledo, Ohio, used Kuperstein as their weekend sports anchor.
The Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award will be presented to Kuperstein in January 2021 for “creat(ing) a 360 view in real time of the coronavirus pandemic, with courageous and thorough reporting on the virus’s explosion in New York City.”
Kuperstein’s anchoring and reporting were a crucial part of NBC 4 New York’s award-winning COVID-19 coverage. The duPont Award, given by Columbia University as well, is widely acknowledged as the Pulitzer Prize of the broadcast, documentary, and online worlds.
Additionally, Kuperstein was the first local television reporter to provide live updates from the scene of the tragic gunfight in Jersey City in December 2019. Murrow Award for “Top Television Newscast” as well as two Regional Awards for “Breaking News Coverage” and “Team Coverage.” Kuperstein described the unfolding events in real time during breaking news coverage.
