Before her television career, McShepard was an innovative fashion designer, creating one-of-a-kind garments for entertainers. In this capacity, her client list included Loose Ends, Abbey Lincoln, Glenn Jones, Nancy Wilson, Allison Williams, Cherelle, The Whispers, The Manhattans, Frankie Beverly and Maze, journalist Soledad O’Brien, and singer/actress Phyllis Hyman.
Aside from her work on screen, McShepard is a writer, motivational speaker, jazz vocalist, and radio personality. Additionally, she has been the spokesperson for The Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute and was on the board of directors for Milwaukee Health Services. Moreover, she sat on the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Community Advisory Board. The Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Association honored her with its Caregiver of the Year Award in 2010.
The United States Postal Service honored her with its Women Putting Their Stamp on Metro Milwaukee Award in 2012. That same year, she was nominated for The Shepherd Express Awards in the categories of “Female Vocalist of the Year” and “Jazz Artist of the Year.” She has pursued ways to express herself more creatively, starring in two plays; “If He Won’t Love, I Will” in 2019 and “Only God Can Judge Me” in 2020.
