Stephens launched her broadcasting career in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, where she anchored and filed general assignment reports for the Mountain Station in Hazard. She spent a number of years there before moving to work at the CBS affiliate in Lexington. In this capacity, she began as a morning reporter, quickly working her way up to the anchor chair and, at some point, anchoring all newscasts at the station.
