Pena was born to Patty Dennis Stone and David de la Pena. Patty, his mother, worked as a Senior Health Educator at the Texas Department of Health from November 1969 to December 2001. She had a Health Administration degree with a minor in Health Education from Southwest Texas State University. Moreover, she was a Certified Health Education Specialist at the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing and had a Bachelor of Science in Elementary certification in Kindergarten from The University of Texas at Austin.
Patty unfortunately passed away in December 2020 after her battle with cancer. On December 10, 2020, he wrote a tribute to her via a Facebook post, captioned, “A prayerful farewell to my amazing mother, Patty Stone, who passed away last night after her battle with cancer. She was blanketed by love and support from our family and friends…Rest in peace, Mom.” David worked as a band teacher at Metz Elementary and Martin Jr High.

Peña works as the sports director for KTBC FOX 7 Austin. He was promoted to that role in 2013 following the retirement of Dave Cody. In addition to that role, he serves as the host of The Sports Office on FOX LOCAL, where he discusses the recent sports topics with John Hygh, Clif Thornton, Julian Martinez, and special guests.
Before his promotion, Peña served FOX 7 Austin as a sports anchor and reporter for over 15 years. He began training in college at KTSB Radio and an extended internship at KXAN-TV. He landed his first media gig at KAMR-TV in Amarillo, where he was the weekend sports anchor in 1994 and was later promoted to sports director.
Besides his broadcasting work, Peña was active with the Children’s Miracle Network and Meals on Wheels in Amarillo. In this capacity, hehelped build homes for the poor and won a “Difference Maker” Award for his community service in the Panhandle region. He continues staying active in Austin as an MC of awards banquets and different sporting events around town, as well as a speaker at schools and college career fairs.
