Childers began his career in 1998 in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he worked as a reporter and weekend anchor for KAUZ TV, a CBS affiliate. His love for television news was sparked there when he had first-hand experience covering the school’s news program on Cable Channel 7. He would ultimately take over as station manager.
