Bernthal works for FOX 2 as an anchor and reporter. Before joining FOX 2 in 2008, he worked as a reporter and anchor at WSIE-FM. Bernthal interned at KPLR-TV after graduating from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1988.
Over the years, Jeff has reported on some of the most significant news events in St. Louis, including as the COVID-19 outbreak, the disturbances in Ferguson, the Presidential and Vice Presidential Debates at Washington University, and the Flood of the Century.
Additionally, he has traveled throughout the nation to cover significant events like the Joplin tornado, Hurricane Andrew, and the Chicago Democratic National Convention in 1996.
In 2020, Jeff established the Missouri Capitol News Bureau for Nexstar with great success. He provided daily updates on the most important legislative problems the state was experiencing. Only FOX 2 and KPLR 11 have a permanent news bureau located within the Missouri Capitol, which is unique among St. Louis television stations.
Jeff has received multiple awards from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the St. Louis Journalism Review for his excellent reporting. He was born and raised in St. Louis and considers himself fortunate to be able to cover the news there.
The National Conference for Community and Justice of Metropolitan St. Louis (NCCJSTL) has had Jeff on its board of directors in the past. This group fights prejudice, intolerance, and racism. Jeff’s reports are available on both FOX 2 News and News 11 on KPLR.
