Swanson was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2014. A month after being the runner-up in the 2014 Miss Rhode Island USA pageant, she was involved in an accident. At the time, a runken driver ran a red light and crashed into a car while she was sitting in the back seat. The impact threw her forward, leading her to hit her head on the dashboard. Even though she felt fine at the scene, but take a precaution and went to the hospital for X-rays of her head. Her skull was fortunately intact, but doctors discovered a dime-sized tumor on her pituitary gland, pressing against her optic nerves. Despite the tumor not being cancerous, she was advised to remove it so that she wouldn’t go blind.

Doctors advised that she could delay the surgery as long as she didn’t have any symptoms. After being the runner-up in the 2015 Miss Rhode Island USA pageant, she underwent a four-hour surgery a few months after the pageant. The doctors removed the tumor through her nose, filling the remaining hole with fat from her stomach. While recuperating at home in Cranston, she experienced headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. She also reduced her classes in college but continued with her studies. The tumor has a 7 percent chance of growing back.
