Mortera moved to Yuma, Arizona, where she was the El Centro bureau reporter for KYMA. After a memorable flight with the Blue Angels, she transferred to the main station office as an anchor, reporter, and weather forecaster.

While in Yuma, Mortera followed a team of doctors across the US-Mexico border, where they equipped Mexican residents with hearing aids, and she witnessed the unforgettable moment when a child heard her mother’s voice for the first time. She also helped the station win an Edward R. Murrow Award for team coverage of a military jet crash.

After spending nearly 2 years at KYMA, Mortera anchored and reported for KVBC-TV, reporting, anchoring, weather anchoring, and traffic reporting from a helicopter. There, she interviewed candidate Barack Obama before covering his historic election night win live from Las Vegas’ Democratic HQ.
