John, his father, was a veteran who served in the U.S. Marine and in Vietnam. Most of his family lives in South Texas, just a few hours north of the Mexican border.

Also, he has anchored ABC 7’s top-rated 4 p.m. newscast since May 2016. Upon his arrival at the station in July 2015, he initially worked as a fill-in anchor and reporter and was later promoted to anchor in March 2023. He joined WLS with more than two decades of news experience.

Before joining WLS ABC 7 Chicago, Elgas worked at NBC 5 Chicago as an anchor for the afternoon news and a reporter for the late evening news. Prior to NBC 5, he anchored on weekends at ABC 7 in El Paso, Texas, in 1998. He was later promoted to co-anchor the morning show, a role he held from 2000 to 2002. His broadcasting career started in Champaign-Urbana, where he was a photographer for WICD-TV.

Elgas filed reports from Naperville, Illinois, following a tornado outbreak that ravaged the small town. Moreover, he served as a co-host of an Emmy Award-winning broadcast of the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival parade alongside Cheryl Burton, Janet Davies, and Judy Hsu. That broadcast was nationally syndicated and displayed in top markets across the nation.

Elgas has also covered two Olympics, the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy. He went all the way to Washington, D.C., for the State of the Union and broadcast breaking news in California and Texas for ABC 7. However, he considers covering the Cubs’ historic World Series triumph, joining Mark Giangreco and Jim Rose in Cleveland for live Game 7 coverage, his most unforgettable assignment.
