He joined NBC 5 Chicago after spending 3 years as a reporter and weekend anchor at WMAR-TV in Baltimore, Maryland. Before WMAR, he reported at WPCQ-TV and WSOC-TV, both in Charlotte, North Carolina. He landed his first broadcasting job in 1969 as a TV engineer at WCCB-TV in Charlotte.

Besides his work as a broadcaster, Norman is extensively involved with the community. Aside from hosting many community events each year, he serves as spokesman for the United Negro College Fund. He is also an on-air host of their telethon and a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Norman has received Emmy Spot News Coverage Awards for the Fox River Grove bus crash. His Cops and Robbers series received a national Investigative Reporters and Editors Award and a 1992-93 Associated Press Award for “Best Investigative Reporting.” In the series, he shed light on secret files on police officers with criminal records. In 1989, he earned a Chicago Emmy for contributing to NBC 5’s broadcast of the Laurie Dann spot news story.

Norman played an integral part in NBC 5’s broadcast of the Beirut hostage crisis, delivering extensive reports on the fate of Geneva and St. Charles residents detained by terrorists. His endeavors were honored with an Emmy Award in 1986. The Religious Public Relations Council granted him its Wilbur Award in 1987 for his Giving God the Glory documentary that traced Chicago’s gospel history. In 1984, he received an International Radio and Television News Directors Award for his live broadcast of the shooting of a divorce court judge and an attorney in a Daley Center courtroom.

Norman did a documentary on the plight of poor children, earning him a School Bell Award from the National Association of Educators in 1978. 2 years prior, he was a writer and photographer on the George Foster Peabody Award-winning edition of NBC’s “Weekend Magazine.” Additionally, he received North Carolina’s RTNDA Award for broadcasting a fatal air balloon crash in 1975.
