When he was six years old, Phillips saw Santa on the radar, and that’s when his dream of becoming a television meteorologist was born. It’s true, yet the extreme weather definitely drew him in. He’s one of those crazy people you see doing a sideways live shoot while strapped to a palm tree during a Category 3 hurricane.
After graduating in 1985, Denis quickly secured his first on-air job in Salisbury, Maryland. Denis eventually made his way to Tampa after making stops in Los Angeles, Gainesville, and Providence. He claims that the weather in the Bay Area has all of the problems he could ask for, including strong thunderstorms, tropical storms, and lots of chances to tie himself to a palm tree!
