She worked at the CBS station KMOV-TV before joining WSB-TV, where she covered local crime and received a Mid-America Emmy. Byfield also worked for KFVS-TV in Southwest Missouri for two years as a general assignment reporter.
Byfield’s reporting was a crucial part of NBC 4 New York’s award-winning COVID-19 coverage, which was recognized in January 2021 with the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for “creating a 360-degree view of the coronavirus pandemic in real-time, with courageous and in-depth reporting on the virus’s explosion in New York City.” The duPont Award has long been acknowledged as the broadcast, documentary, and online counterpart of the Pulitzer Prize, which is also given out by Columbia University.
Byfield’s reporting also played a significant role in a second major station accolade. The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), which presented NBC 4 New York with the 2020 National Edward R. Murrow Award for Top Television Newscast, acknowledged her efforts during the fatal December 2019 gunfight in Jersey City.
Three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for investigative reporting and team coverage of the 2017 Tribeca terrorist incident have honored Byfield’s dedication to the highest standards of journalism.
Two New York Emmys were also awarded for this coverage. As a member of the NBC 4 New York crew covering the Chelsea bombing investigation in 2016, Byfield received a New York Emmy. She was also listed as a finalist for the IRE medal.
