He has worked in the TV news industry for over 3 decades, launching his career in Iowa in 1991 when the Persian Gulf War broke out.
Vigil, a three-time Emmy award winner, has served at TV newsrooms in Lawton, Lubbock, and Albuquerque, where he spent much of his career. During his tenure in New Mexico, he provided coverage for dozens of wildfires, including the devastating Cerro Grande Fire in Los Alamos that destroyed numerous homes. Moreover, he won many reporting awards during his time there.
Following 16 years of working in New Mexico, Vigil moved to Alaska. In Alaska, he worked as a primary anchor and reporter for KTVA 11 News. There, he was part of the team that broadcast November 2018’s 7.1 magnitude earthquake that devastated businesses, homes, and the KTVA newsroom. Even though the newsroom had cameras knocked over, shattered glass, and leaking water from damaged water pipes, they continued their operations as they reported crucial information about the earthquake to Alaskans. KTLA won two Regional Emmy Awards for its coverage. He and his colleagues were recognized with an Emmy for the 30-minute special on “The Last Frontier Honor Flight.”
Vigil went to Washington, D.C., with Alaska WWII, Vietnam, and Korean War veterans to tour their war memorials. He felt privileged to be among those who put their lives on the line with hesitation for freedom and is forever grateful to those who serve.
