Steward works for WTKR as News 3’s weekend evening meteorologist. Additionally, she will be on WGNT on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 10 p.m. In May 2021, she joined the First Warning Storm crew. Kristy worked as the morning and noon meteorologist at WNKY in Bowling Green, Kentucky, before relocating to Hampton Roads.
During her tenure in south-central Kentucky, she reported on all types of weather, including tornadoes, flooding, droughts, and even tropical remnants. Kristy fell in love with hurricane forecasting during the active 2020 hurricane season and developed an itch to move closer to the beach and the action in the tropics. Additionally, in 2020, the Kentucky Broadcasters Association named Kristy runner-up for Best Weathercast in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. She was a member of the honorable team that won Kentucky’s Best Morning Newscast in 2019 and finished second in 2020.
She did a period as an anchor, co-host, and meteorologist for their sister station WGTA in Atlanta, GA, while continuing to perform her primary meteorology duties at WNKY. Along with the nighttime meteorologist, she also started a weekly weather podcast. She began broadcasting as a freshman and continued throughout her stay in college, taking part in all six possibilities for student-run shows. In addition, she made three cross-country storm-chasing journeys, which is hilarious given that she grew up being scared of tornadoes.
She did witness a couple of tornadoes during those chase flights, including one that came dangerously close. She completed internships at KTTC in Rochester, Minnesota, and WRAL in Raleigh, North Carolina. Being back close to home and in a region with mild winters makes Kristy very happy. When she’s not predicting the weather, she likes taking her dog and two cats on adventures in southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina.
