“Nicholas’ Gift of Life,” the story of a Bay Area boy whose organs were donated to seven Italian recipients, earned Melendez an Emmy and RTNDA in 1999. She received the Outstanding Person in Communications Award from the Puerto Rican Institute of New York, the Asociación de Cronistas de espectaculos Award for Reporter of the Year, and the Latina Media Person of the Year Award from New York University in 1992.
Melendez came from CNN-SPANISH in New York where she functioned as a senior reporter and substitute anchor. She has also held positions at Puerto Rico’s San Juan television stations. In 1984, she worked as a production specialist at WTMJ in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she began her broadcasting career.
Special assignments have taken Melendez to Somalia, Iraq, Central and South America, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Melendez covers the Guides and training beat in the Narrows Region.
