Santia works for NBC 4 New York as a reporter on criminal justice, security, and general assignment issues. He regularly appears on weekdays at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m.
Santia has covered many of our region’s most notable stories since joining NBC 4 New York as a general assignment reporter in July 2012. He was one of the first reporters on the scene of the Empire State Building shooting shortly after joining the station.
Later that year, when Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the Tri-State, Santia was on Staten Island, where his crew car submerged. Santia and his team were taken care of by a kind family to weather the storm after losing their car and possessions.
Santia spent more than 15 years at WDIV-TV in Detroit before joining NBC 4 New York. There, he started as an intern, advanced to investigative reporter, and eventually won an Emmy® Award for outstanding journalism.
Santia covered Kwame Kilpatrick’s investigation, arrest, prosecution, and punishment when she was in Detroit. Additionally, he documented Terry Jones’ trip to Dearborn, Michigan, where he burned the Koran. In 2018, Santia’s reporting on the infamous Bob Bashara murder case in Michigan was highlighted in CNBC’s “Deadly Rich” series.
Santia has also ventured outside of the Tri-State region to cover significant issues. Santia covered the horrific Aurora, Colorado, movie theater massacre in 2012. He went to Las Vegas in 2017 to chronicle the murderous concert shooting that took place in front of the Mandalay Bay resort. A year later, Santia went to North Carolina to report on Hurricane Florence’s effects.
Santia was embedded with the NYPD during the coverage and provided Tri-State viewers with a running account of their numerous fast water rescues.

Santia’s reporting played a significant role in NBC 4 New York’s award-winning coverage of COVID-19, which was recognized in January 2021 with the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for “creat(ing) a 360 view in real time of the coronavirus pandemic, with courageous and in-depth reporting on the virus’s explosion in New York City.”
The duPont Award, given by Columbia University as well, is widely acknowledged as the Pulitzer Prize of the broadcast, documentary, and online worlds.
Santia received a New York Emmy® in 2016 for the narrative “Walking Again, For the First Time,” which followed one man’s struggle to regain his ability to move. Santia received two New York Emmys® for his investigative work two years later. Among them was “Hijacking Hollywood,” which examined a string of robberies that affected movie production businesses working in New York City.
In “The Gold Bucket Bandit,” Santia followed a gold robbery suspect in Ecuador and brought viewers on a fascinating adventure while he was doing the alleged crime. Following then, the story was covered both nationally and internationally.
