His career began at WSAZ-TV in Huntington, West Virginia, and he afterward worked at WYOU in Scranton, WLKY in Louisville, KSTP in Minneapolis, Hearst Argyle Washington Bureau, and WTTG in Washington before returning to New York in 2006 to work at WNBC.
Gargiulo has covered several of the Tri-State’s most notable stories, including the storm-related devastation in Breezy Point, Queens in 2012, the steam pipe explosion in Manhattan’s Flatiron District in 2018, and the President Biden’s inauguration in 2021 from Washington, D.C.
He has a particular interest in military matters, and following Hurricane Maria, he traveled to Puerto Rico with the New York National Guard on a special aid mission. Prior to the conclusion of combat operations in Afghanistan, Gargiulo was one of the last reporters to be embedded with a U.S. military unit there and received an Emmy Award for his reporting from Iraq and Kuwait.
The Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award will be given in January 2021 to Gargiulo for “creating a 360 view in real time of the coronavirus pandemic, with courageous and thorough reporting on the virus’s explosion in New York City.” Gargiulo’s anchoring was a crucial part of NBC 4 New York’s award-winning COVID-19 coverage.
