Before becoming a journalist, Styles was a professional ski racer. While growing up, he surfed in the summer, developing a passion for nature and the weather at La Jolla Shores. By the time he was 20, he had traveled to California, Mexico, and Hawaii. He went skiing in Utah during the winter. Impressed by his skiing, his friends convinced him to join a freestyle skiing competition. That competition led him to a career as a professional ski racer.
Styles’s work in TV wasn’t planned, yet he found himself working in movies and television as his ski racing career was ending. He slowly but gradually ventured into journalism, starting by providing snow reports for East Coast radio stations from his pro skiing job in Park City, Utah. He then moved to surf forecasts for KGTV in August 1996, and eventually landed at CBS 8.
