In 2017, Smith starred as Sheriff Jane Greene in A&E’s psychological horror series, Bates Motel for 7 episodes. She played Jane in the fifth and final season of the series.

From 2006 to 2008, Smith starred as Dr. Erica Hahn in the medical drama series, Grey’s Anatomy for 25 episodes. Even though she was set on avoiding relationships, she has feelings for orthopedic surgeon, Callie Torres.
