His passion for the weather started when he was still a child living in Big Flats, New York. He says that as a child, his parents could tell he was different when he’d run outside during a thunderstorm. Big storms have always fascinated him and still do today.
LaPointe’s interest in the weather blossomed after he experienced firsthand the flood of June 1972, the powerful impact of Hurricane Belle in southern New England in 1976, and the Blizzard of ‘78 that struck southern New Hampshire. The flood of June 1972 was caused by the torrential rains from former Hurricane Agnes and is one of the most devastating floods on record in the Northeast.
LaPointe’s career started right after university at WMUR in Manchester, New Hampshire, as an emergency fill-in. After working at WMUR for two weeks, he moved to Savannah, Georgia, as an anchor and reporter at WSAV.

LaPointe was the first to locally produce a forecast product on the internet in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy market in February 1996. He created and still maintains the online historical weather database, which entails the storm summaries and daily weather information for the area centered on Albany from May 1988 to the present.

In 1991, LaPointe received the American Meteorological Society Television Seal of approval. He received the New York State Associated Press Outstanding Newscast and Coverage Award for the blizzard of 1993.
In 1995, LaPointe was recognized by the New York State Associated Press Award for best newscast coverage of the Memorial Day severe weather outbreak, which created a destructive series of tornadoes that hit Hillsdale, New York, and Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
LaPointe was a nominee for the New York State Emmy Awdard for outstanding on-camera achievement and for his persistent weather coverage of the 1998 Memorial Day tornado outbreak in Mechanicville-Stillwater. Furthermore, the coverage was acknowledged for keeping the residents informed and safe during the crisis.
LaPointe won the New York State Emmy Outstanding Educational Programming Award. He received the award for developing the renowned half-hour severe weather special, Storm Warning, which aired during the spring of 2003. In 2004, he co-produced, directed, and wrote Storm Warning 2, which won the New York State Broadcasters Award for best educational program.
LaPointe received the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal in April 2007, the highest level of certification from the American Meteorological Society. Moreover, he was nominated for a New York State Emmy Award for broadcast excellence in the weather category in 2014.
