Michels works as a meteorologist for FOX31’s Pinpoint Weather team. In this role, he is on the air on weekday mornings on Daybreak on 2. When he joined the station, he started as a meteorologist, then got promoted to a morning meteorologist airing on Daybreak on 2.
Throughout his career, Michels has won several awards, including the Edward R. Murrow award for covering tornadoes that went through Virginia. He has also received multiple honors from the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association, winning the Best Meteorologist award in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and earning Outstanding Specialty Reporting awards in 2015 and 2016 for his Weather Wise: Wallops Island CDA series and Weather Wise: Severe Weather series, respectively. Additionally, in 2018, he and his team were awarded the Best Weathercast by Virginia’s Associated Press.
Michels’s career started at 47 ABC (WMDT), where he worked as a meteorologist on the weekends and a fill-in when needed. Thereafter, he worked at CBS 4 (WHBF) in Rock Island, Illinois, as a morning meteorologist. There, he covered deadly weather, cold and snowy winters, and crucial floods along the Mississippi River. He later returned to WMDT in in Salisbury, Maryland, and worked as the chief meteorologist.
After his stint in Salisbury, Michels moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he worked at 8News (WRIC) as a weekend meteorologist before joining FOX31 in November 2021. While on the East Coast, he covered major hurricanes, several critical storms, numerous tornadoes, and several major snowstorms.
