In 2023, Tyla gained international prominence for her 2023 single, “Water.” The single reached top ten hits in the United Kingdom and was the initial song by a South African soloist to reach the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years, succeeding Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass” in 1968. Epic Records signed her in 2021 after she attained success with her debut single dubbed “Getting Late” featuring Kooldrin.
She started out posting original songs and covers to her Instagram page, and sending them out to various figures in the music industry. Following this, her initial manager discovered her and then organized her initial recording sessions.
In late 2019, she released “Getting Late” featuring Kooldrink, gaining national success. The song’s video received a nomination for Music Video of the Year at the 28th South African Music Awards in 2022. Through a shared venture with Fax Records in the United States, she signed a recording contract with Epic Records. Next, she released with the singles “To Last” and “Overdue.”
In 2023, she debuted performing at the Dolce & Gabbana afterparty at Milan Fashion Week after releasing the single “Been Thinking.” The single earned her initial chart placement of her career, on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. After collaborating with Ayra Starr, she released “Water” in July 2023 as the lead single from her approaching debut extended play. Water went viral for its TikTok dance and topped 10 in New Zealand, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, topping the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart.
She performed the song live on The Bianca Show in Sweden and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in the United States. Its music video reached 3 million views in 3 days after its release on October 7, 2023. In October 2023, she was featured in Summer Walker’s Girl Needs Love remix version as Girls Mix extended play.
Tyla Water Challenge “Make me sweat Make me water”
Tyla rose to prominence with her Water single. Most people know her from her Water Challenge on TikTok. Aside from the song’s catchy beats, the song’s choreography became a fan favorite, with celebrities and everyday people trying the challenge. Litchi choreographed the dance.
In August 2023, Tyla posted herself dancing to the song by shaking her hips, and kicking her legs before pouring water down her back in time to the lyrics “Make me sweat, make me hotter, make me lose my breath, make me water…” Her enticing dancing prompted people to try the dance for themselves.
