Busby works at KMBC as the chief meteorologist. He’s also heard on News Radio 980 and 98.1 FM, KMBZ, as well as Dana and Parks on afternoons. Since joining KMBC, he has proved himself a leading meteorologist in Kansas City. His fun, interaction, and community outreach are key attributes that make him Kansas City’s favorite television personality.

Busby has placed KMBC on the weather map with innovative programs such as “Weather-To-Go,” “Bryan Goes to School, “Guaranteed Weather, “Earth Station,” and “Instant Weather Network.” Instant Weather Network, his weather display, earned him the U.S. Patent No. 5,943,630.

Busby previously worked for the Chiefs’ Fox Football Radio Network as the chief meteorologist. He jump-started his career as a TV weatherman at 17. In 1978, he started working at KTVI, Channel 2 in St. Louis, as an intern. After only 8 weeks, he got on air as the station’s weekend weathercaster. He stayed in St. Louis for eight years before coming to KMBC 9 News.

Busby realized his dream to TV weather while he was still a child in the 3rd grade. He says he loves his job, and it was a childhood dream to do TV weather. Additionally, he notes that he is thrilled to be working his dream, and he hopes it shows. His interest in weather started when he was a child in Cleveland, Ohio. While studying, he realized that he belonged on TV.

Orchestra Work

Besides his work as a forecaster, Busby is a principal timpanist for the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, performing 5 to 6 times a year. He also holds that role at the Kinnor Philharmonic and the Saint Joseph Symphony, the professional orchestra for that city. Moreover, he served as the solo timpanist for the Independence Messiah Festival Orchestra. In this capacity, he played in the group’s annual performance of Messiah at the Community of Christ Auditorium from 1992 to 2005.

Busby has also performed with the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Percussion Quartet, and the Moody Blues at Sandstone Amphitheater, now known as Azura Amphitheater. He appeared as a guest conductor of the Kansas City Youth Symphony. He previously conducted the group in the United States Pavilion at the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, Yardley Hall at the Midwest Trust Center, Kemper Arena, Spain, and recently at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Apart from his Youth Symphony activities, he has appeared as a guest conductor at regional symphonies, bands, community orchestras, and high schools.

Besides his musical abilities, Busby is acknowledged for his ability to imitate cartoon voices. For instance, he voiced his cartoon character called Georgie Global, who was featured on the Web, television, and in newspapers across the country. Except for Santa, he provided all the voices during his annual radio Santa tracking for several years. He plans to venture into doing voice-overs after he retires from broadcasting.

Community Work and Awards

Acknowledged as one of the leading broadcast meteorologists in the country, Busby was appointed to the National Chapter of the American Meteorological Society’s Board of Broadcast Meteorologists. That committee later chose him as the chairman, a position he held from 1997 to 1998.

In 2021, Busby began working as a board director of the National Weather Association. He was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle in 2015. Before that, he was appointed to work on the Board of Directors of the National Weather Association in 2012. During that year, he was considered for the position of a weathercaster at “Good Morning America.” He was chosen among 10 other weathercasters to be featured in the Weather Channel’s “America’s Forecasters” series.

Throughout Busby’s career, he has won many awards for his work, including the National Chapter of the American Meteorological Society’s Award for Broadcast Meteorology in 2010. In 2023, he won an American Meteorological Society Fellowship, an honor he received in recognition of his contribution to science.

Busby won 9 Emmy Awards in the years 1993, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2020. In addition, he has been nominated for the Emmy Award in the years 1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2006, and 2007. In 1998, he won the Black Achievers Award and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Award. On top of that, he won 10 Outstanding Young Missourians, the Missouri Jaycee in 1992.
