Simpson can’t say when he first became interested in the weather since he can’t recall ever not being fascinated and intrigued by it. He was raised in Holly Pond, a small, rural village in North-Central Alabama, where he developed a deep faith in God, completed high school, and observed how other hard-working individuals followed their dreams.
He attended Mississippi State University, where he graduated first in his class, in 2001. Following that, he traveled to Missouri, then back to Mississippi, before returning to Central Alabama in 2005. While the weather dream reveals part of the tale, the best part of Jason’s fantasy was realized in 2009 when he met Lacey in Alabaster’s Veteran’s Park.
Jason and his family relocated to Huntsville not long after the birth of their first child, Walt, and he worked as the chief meteorologist at WHNT for ten years. Shelby and Brody were born in Huntsville, but Jason and his family had to return to Birmingham for care at Children’s of Alabama due to Brody’s critical health difficulties.
In order to support the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center of Alabama at Children’s of Alabama, Jason and Lacey joined forces with three other North Alabama families who they had become acquainted with as a result of their experiences at Children’s.
The result was the creation of the Castin’ ‘N’ Catchin’ fundraiser, which they used to raise nearly a million dollars for heart care and research at the hospital here in Birmingham from 2016 to 2022.
