Zaffino works for KGW as a chief meteorologist. In 1996, Matt left KATU to become Chief Meteorologist at KGW. In recognition of his 25+ years of exceptional contribution to broadcasting in the Northwest, he was accepted into the renowned National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Silver Circle in 2016.

His appreciation of the weather stems from his passion for the great outdoors and wild places. Additionally, in his German class in high school. His teacher explained the prerequisites for a snowstorm and called off class for the day while drawing meteorological maps on the chalkboard. Since then, he has been creating weather maps.

Matt worked as an intern and later as a weather producer at KTVX in Salt Lake City while he was a meteorology student at the University of Utah. He first relocated to Battle Creek, Michigan, where he hosted the morning and evening weathercasts, before moving to Traverse City, Michigan, in 1984 to forecast the weather at WGTU.

In 1985, he gladly made his way back to the West to anchor the weather at KDRV in Medford, Oregon. He was employed by KATU in Portland in 1988 to provide weekend weather coverage. Matt developed his writing and storytelling abilities for television news while reporting on the environment.

He assisted in setting up KATU’s morning news before being elevated to the nightly newscasts. Matt won the Best Weathercaster award from the Oregon Associated Press in 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2002, as well as in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2015.

Matt has been nominated for numerous Emmy Awards and has won three of them for outstanding individual accomplishments in weather casting in 2000, 2015, and 2016.

In recognition of his 25+ years of exceptional contribution to broadcasting in the Northwest, he was accepted into the renowned National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Silver Circle in 2016. He is the only person to have ever broadcast live on television from the summit of Mount Hood.

Additionally, Matt covered the Winter Olympics in Utah in 2002 and Vancouver in 2010 for KGW in addition to the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. For KINK FM in Portland, Matt conducted live radio broadcasts from the Greenland Ice Sheet throughout the summer of 2004 to report on climate change studies.
