Despite being born in Pennsylvania, he is familiar with the Plains, having experience working in some of the toughest weather conditions in the nation. Before moving to Kansas City, he worked at KWTV in Oklahoma City, KOTV in Tulsa, and KVII in Amarillo, Texas.
Throughout Bender’s career, he has experienced nature’s wrath, including historic blizzards, swamping floods, mile-wide tornadoes, destructive wildfires, and damaging earthquakes. As part of VORTEX2, the largest and most ambitious scientific field experiment in history, he helped make significant strides in understanding tornado formation and improving the lead time for tornado warnings in 2010.
Bender tracked and shared crucial information from SkyNews9 during the May 24, 2011, tornado outbreak. At the time, he observed firsthand as a mile-wide EF5 tornado tore a path of destruction perilously close to the towns of El Reno and Piedmont, Oklahoma. In 2013, Oklahoma experienced severe weather conditions, marked by a violent 12-day outbreak. This included an EF5 tornado that ruined the town of Moore, Oklahoma, and a record-setting 2.6-mile-wide EF3 tornado that ravaged the land mere miles west of the Oklahoma City metropolitan region.
While reporting about the devastating events of March 6, 2017, for StormTracker9, Bender provided viewers with the sole live broadcast of the EF3 Oak Grove tornado moments before it passed through the town. Luckily, there were no casualties. For this coverage, he and his team were awarded a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award. He has also received several National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Regional Emmy Awards.
