Higgins works for FOX 2 as a weather reporter, he started his career as an intern in 1990. Before joining the station in February 1994, Higgins worked for the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a Director of Inspection.

He has a lifetime of knowledge about our unpredictable weather. Higgins has lived through them all, including the extremely severe winters of the late 1970s, the “Blizzard of ’82,” the “Drought of ’88,” or the “Great Flood of ’93, as well as the “New Year’s Eve Tornado” and the “Good Friday Tornado.”

He relocated to Joplin, Missouri, in the midst of “Tornado Alley,” where he worked as the chief meteorologist at KODE-TV for two exhilarating years after I graduated from SLU in 1992.

He returned to St. Louis in 1994 and began working for FOX 2 as the weekend meteorologist. In 2014, he was promoted to main forecaster for Fox 2 News at 11 p.m. (Monday through Friday).

He was pleased to earn the first of his eight Emmy awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in October 2002 for his work in weather reporting and forecasting.

After passing a demanding written test that covered many facets of atmospheric and natural sciences, he became the first meteorologist in St. Louis history to acquire the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) certification in July 2006.

He fulfilled a lifelong desire in June 2003 when he received his commission as an officer in the Air Force Reserve. Higgins was sent to the Middle East’s deserts during the summer of 2008 to aid in the battles in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He has twice been named the Reserve Component’s Weather Officer of the Year by the United States Air Force. The first real-world Tornado Watch ever issued by the United States Air Force was sent out by him in 2013, while he was working on the Storm Prediction Center backup team.

Last but not least, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2019 and hopes to retire as a “Light Colonel” in 2023.
